Volunteer Opportunity Weds. April 9th

Hello volunteers,

It’s that time of year when Fish & Game is in need of volunteer labor. A statewide adipose fin clipping of all salmon prior to stocking will be conducted at the Powder Mills Hatchery in New Durham on April 9, 2014. The plan is to complete the procedure in one day which is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..

Lots of help will be required to accomplish the task in one day, and your help will be most appreciated. With weather predominating clothing should include rain gear, warm boots, gloves, hat, and a change of clothes due to the real possibility of getting wet. Also, bring a lunch, or be prepared to purchase something nearby. If you have not participated in this procedure previously you will find it interesting.

Those interested are instructed to contact Dianne Timmins at dianne.timmins@wildlife.nh.gov, or telephone the Lancaster office at 603-788-3164 for further details, and to provide a count for planning purposes.

Thank you in advance.

Jim Timmins

TU Council Volunteer Coordinator

Thurs. March 6th meeting at UVO

Greetings All –
The GUVTU March chapter meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 6th.  The meeting will be held at Upper Valley Outfitters in Lebanon, NH where the doors will open at 6:00pm and the meeting will begin at 6:30.  Pizza will be available.
Our very own Chris Moore will be speaking to us about bamboo rods.  Chris is a historian of sorts on the subject and is also a bamboo rod builder.  When asked at the last meeting if he would be willling to look at an old rod another member had laying around the house, Chris said to bring it on down.  He can’t make any promises about complete history or value, but said he’s be willing to look.
Hope to see you there.

Jan. 2014 membership meeting at UVO

Greetings All –

I’m sending this note out a bit earlier than usual this month due to a change to our usual Membership Meeting schedule for January.  Since the first Thursday of January in 2014 is the 2nd, we thought that might be a bit too close to “The Holidays” still to have a meeting.  So, we’ve pushed it out a week.
The GUVTU Chapter January meeting will be help on Thursday, January 9th, 2014 at Upper Valley Outfitters in Lebanon, NH.  Doors will open at 6:00 pm and pizza will be avialable.
Guest speakers will be Jim MacCartney, the Director of River Restoration out of the Concord, NH Trout Unlimited office, and John Magee, Fish Habitat Biologist for the NH Fish and Game Department.
Jim and John will be providing an update on the Nash Stream Restoration Project taking place in northern New Hampshire.  There has been lots of progress on this project and word is there are plenty of nice pictures to help illustrate this.
As a general announcement, the chapter is still without an Activities Committee Chairman.  The primary responsibility of this position is to arrange for speakers/programs at the monthly chapter meetings.  If you have any interest in this position please contact me, or another member of the Board of Directors, and I can provide additional information.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Healthy New Year!!!
See you in 2014.

Casting For Recovery needs Volunteers

Helpers are needed for Sunday June 9th Casting For Recovery event!!!

Essentially helpers will act as one on one guides to the CFR retreat participants. There is an official “job description” and some information on teaching fly fishing to breast cancer survivors. The time commitment is from 8:45 to at least 12 on Sunday, June 9th and river helpers are invited and encouraged to stay for lunch. This year’s retreat will be held in Stowe – people will meet at the Golden Eagle Resort.

If this appeals to people, they will need to fill out an online volunteer application at www.castingforrecovery.org and once that’s done, additional information will be sent to you. This would be a good opportunity to see how this wonderful program works “from the inside”.
